"Kill Me" (Al Menne Cover)

I'm an acoustic boy now

I’ve had this song in my head all week. I’ve been having a tough time and keep muttering “Kill Me” under my breath, then I start humming this beautiful song and it makes me feel a bit better.

I saw Al Menne play in December in LA. I had no clue who they were. I was at the Chris Farren holiday show, and they were opening, and the whole time they were playing I kept whispering “holy shit” to everyone around me. The room was silent, attentive, and the songs were so so good, so beautiful. When they played “Kill Me” my jaw was on the floor. It’s so simple, but so effective and those are my favourite kinda songs.

MORE BAD STUFF is a reader-supported publication and it’s very good despite the name just subscribe to this thing if you haven’t already for fuck sakes.

Then I found out that Al Menne is from the incredible indie rock band Great Grandpa. I probably should’ve known that. Sue me. I got hooked in 2017 on their record “Plastic Cough”. You can probably hear echoes of that album on our 2019 record Morbid Stuff. The records you’re listening to when you’re writing your own stuff tend to seep into your skull whether you want them to or not, and that’s probably the case with Morbid Stuff and Plastic Cough.

Speaking of Morbid Stuff, there’s a song off that record, “Kids”, and I think I was going for a similar thing as “kill me” on that one. I wanted to write a love song that was still dark and kinda funny, I was pretty happy when I landed on the chorus line of “I don’t care about nothing but you”, it seemed to sum up the weird combination of love and also existential despair I was feeling in that moment. Maybe that’s why I was also so drawn to a love song called “Kill Me”.
